Drone technology is very much on the rise. Aquila Ecology is trying to use drones in a positive way, to improve ecological research. Commissioned by RFO, Aquila Ecology conducted research into the possibility of using drones to fly low over vegetation to take detailed photos of vegetation. The biggest challenge is getting the drone to follow the terrain height, avoid obstacles and deal with high, thin blades that sensors find difficult to pick up. Therefore, among other things, we developed an image recognition model that can 'see' with high certainty whether a thin sprite is close to the camera. The technical possibility of indeed using drones to do vegetation research at low altitude is certainly there. However, the conclusion is that this will still require quite a bit of development. In part, this is development that is already happening in the drone market: sensors are slowly getting better and AI in the drone itself is also emerging. In part, it is development that we hope Aquila Ecology can bring about itself. For example, incorporating an AI model to avoid sprites.
