Distinguishing grasshoppers (and crickets) in research and SNL monitoring is often a challenge. To enhance the quality of research on this species group, Aquila Ecology has developed software to distinguish species based on sound. The recognition has very high accuracy because we use a proprietary, powerful algorithm. All predictions can be manually checked afterwards.

SNL census

Aquila Ecology can automatically analyse a sound recording, for example collected during an SNL insect monitoring exercise. Aquila Ecology also has the expertise to check the sound recordings for incorrect determinations. At low cost, an accurate determination of the occurrence of grasshoppers and crickets can thus be made.

Research

Besides SNL counts, Aquila Ecology can also conduct or support scientific research on grasshoppers. With our technique, we can measure changes or differences in grasshopper fauna much more accurately in less time compared to classical methods. By automatically analysing recordings over days or months, it is possible to compile very extensive datasets that increase the quality of the research.

Android app

The AI model that can recognise grasshoppers based on sound has been built into a free Android app by Aquila Ecology. We are doing this to make grasshoppers better known, make identification easier and thus contribute to the protection of this species group.
